The Colorful Rug That's Causing an Industry Craze

There's a reason why kilim rugs are becoming a favorite among interior designers; they're old but modern, eclectic yet trendy, and bold but somehow astonishingly adaptable. Hailing from a region that spans from the Balkans to Pakistan, these tapestry-woven carpets were traditionally used as prayer rugs. While some smaller versions still serve that purpose, secular design buffs are scooping them up for their striking color and pattern combinations.

Above, designer Amber Lewis uses a rainbow-hued kilim to anchor the dining section in her LA home — a smart tip for defining separate spaces in an open layout. She balances the rug's busy design with a streamlined dining table and modern dining chairs but uses pillows to pull in the rug's palette.

In this bedroom by Jessica Helgerson Interior Design, the bright rug balances the moodiness of the charcoal-painted wall and ceiling. Just like in Amber's dining room, sleek, midcentury pieces prove to be the perfect counterpoint.

Believe it or not, Etsy is actually a treasure trove for finding these beauties. Regardless of the size you need or the budget you're working with, the incredible range of vendors seems to offer something for everyone. Check out this '60s-era Turkish option we uncovered for $499 — it's a dead ringer, no?

Even if your floors are taken care of, who's to say you couldn't display your new kilim elsewhere? Just think of what a statement this kilim would make hung above a bed (buh-bye headboard!).
