Shirley Vauvelle

Shirley creates wall hung and freestanding sculptures and shadow frames, using white earthenware to hand form flower components, small creatures, birds and fish. Texture is embossed into the surface. Under glazes and oxides are applied to give layers of colour. These are then assembled together with driftwood, wire, reclaimed maps, vintage magazines and other interesting finds from the local beaches.

Her inspiration comes from her continually evolving garden, her love of the coast and treasure hunting for wave worn finds. Shirley finds delight in recycling materials, creating objects that are a little bit different and quirky. She likes the idea of layering texture and colour to create pieces that are totally individual - each has a little tale to tell. Over time the components are evolving as new colours are introduced and intricate surface qualities develop.

Shirley is able to offer bespoke pieces, using her large collection of vintage and retro maps. She has created unique pieces for weddings, anniversaries and a variety of special occasions using locations with a personal relevance for the client.
