I love to repurpose old picture frames in lots of different ways. This is my favorite.

I am using this picture even though it shows how untidy I can be. It shows the scale of the frame. I really like making these. The frames with detail make the prettiest shadow boxes. I like to look for these at the Peddler’s Mall. I have a $5.00 limit on frames, no matter how pretty they may be. I’m not much of a yard saler, because I don’t have the patience to weed through all the hair dryers and coffee pots!

I actually use new materials when I make these, which is unusual for me. I mostly used “found” materials. I make a simple box and shelves out of 1×4’s. I prefer to use bead board as the backer board, but I have used regular luan.

Once you’ve made the box and shelves, you simply glue and nail through the front of the frame into the box. If the shadow box is large, I install the hangers on 16 inch centers, so they can be hung on studs.
