All of the supplies you need to make hand print charms can be found at your local craft store. This is a great project not only for Mother’s Day but other holiday’s and celebrations as well! You can use hand print charms to make key chains for Father’s Day, Ornaments for Christmas, a fun take home craft for a Birthday celebration, or a class craft project to thank a teacher!

Hand print charms are easy to make with a few simple supplies. This is a great group project for your next playdate or get together. The supplies are relatively inexpensive and can stretch to accommodate a crowd.

Supplies:

  • Shrink Plastic
  • Large Ink Pad (I like Big and Juicy “Happy Birthday from Ranger Ink)
  • Foam Mat for Stamping (in a pinch use a mouse pad)
  • Jump rings and lobster clasps
  • Metal Letter Charms
  • Embossing Powder
  • Letter Stamps (optional)

STEP 1: Lay out supplies and place a sheet of shrink plastic on your foam mat.

*TIP* Place a plain sheet of white paper under shrink plastic to get a clear view of your hand print

STEP 2: Have your child ink their hand.

Check to make sure hand is well covered. You may need to help your child by pressing down on their hand while on the ink pad.

STEP 4 (optional): If you want to add a name or initial to your Hand print charms simply stamp over your hand print image with Archival Ink.

*TIP* Larger letters work best for this step. (My letters were much too small) Also, be sure to stamp your letters backwards…unlike myself who forgot

STEP 5: Sprinkle Embossing Powder over wet ink and tap off excess. DO NOT Heat with a heat gun! The powder will melt when you bake the shrink plastic.

*Add sparkle to your hand print charms with Ranger Holographic embossing powder.

*UPDATE* The embossing powder will make the ink permanent so don’t skip this step.

STEP 6: Cut out hand print leaving a slight edge around the image. Punch a hole between the thumb and forefinger.

*TIP* Only cut half way down between fingers to prevent breakage.

STEP 7: Bake according to shrink plastic package directions. Don’t get nervous when it curls up you may have wacky pointing fingers for a bit but they will flatten out just be PATIENT. I baked my son’s hand print in the toaster oven and watched it like a hawk.

*TIP* For larger hands you may need to bake longer just stand by and watch it so it doesn’t burn. If it’s not flat enough when you take it out of the oven pop it back in for a few more minutes.

STEP 8 (optional): Apply Embossing Ink to metal letter charm and emboss with Stampendous Frantage Embossing Enamels

STEP 9: Add jump rings and a lobster clasp to create your charm.

*TIP* You can also create necklaces or bracelets by adding chain. Use other findings to create earrings, key chains and more!

Originally I wanted to use my son’s hand print to make a necklace. Unfortunately little man has not so little hands and his hand print worked better as a heartfelt handbag charm!
