UPDATED: See our newest family room makeover here!

So remember when I asked for help with my family room makeover a few weeks ago? You guys were SO helpful, and I loved hearing from all of you! Want to see what the couch area looks like now?

Ahh I am in LOVE with our new look!! As you can see, I went a little bit of a different direction with the look than I originally gave with this post. Almost 1/2 of you said it needed more color, so I found this adorable lime chevron print on sale at JoAnns, and it happened to be next to that gorgeous blue and white fabric!! I was originally in love with the dark blue geometric fabric, but I really couldn’t get this lighter blue fabric out of my mind. Plus, I love the blue/green fabric combination in the room right next to the family room on our window seat!

A big part of this transformation is due to a DIY sofa table we made. This is a VERY simple project that makes a VERY big impact. It’s holding the lamps and canning jars in the photos above, and it’s the perfect holding place for books and drinks while sitting on the couch!

There’s no special tools needed, and no fancy cuts. This is such a simple project that ANYONE can make, I promise!

I first measured the back of our couch, and got wood cut at Home Depot so the table would fall right below the back of the couch. I got 4 2x4s for the legs, one 1×10 for the top of the table, and a 1×4 for the support beam.

We measured 6 inches in from the underside of the top piece, and fastened the 2x4s with brackets.

PS – those are my husband’s hairy legs and arms – not mine. Just in case you were wondering

Then we attached the support beam to the 2x4s:

We also attached these handy little support thingers (no idea what they’re really called – sorry!) to the 2x4s at the bottom to make it even more secure:

Finally, I stained it with Dark Walnut (affiliate link)

We let it dry, put it behind the sofa, and set our lamps on it! I used little blocks of leftover wood to elevate the lamps a little, but that’s totally up to you if you want to do that or not.

I can’t wait to share the rest of the wall behind the couch – it’s almost finished!!

Just to give you a glimpse into what the couch looks like 90% of the day…
