Let’s face it, we don’t all have space for a huge garden. We also don’t all have a nice green thumb {raises hand}. So, a pallet garden can be much easier to manage for those just starting to learn to garden. With a pallet garden, you can still get outside with the family and enjoy nurturing and growing your own food in baby steps. There are lots of ways to make a pallet garden so check out our pallet garden tutorial and let us know what you think.

A year or so ago I got this huge pallet with a piece of furniture that was delivered to my house. I hate throwing stuff away that seems like it might come in handy one day so I kept it. Finally, I decided what we should do with it: plant a pallet garden!

You will need…

1 pallet

staple gun w/staples

gardening gloves

scissors

landscaping paper

potting soil

dirt

seeds

water

We have tried our hands at gardens before but our backyard is really sloped and not ideal for a garden, so a pallet garden is a perfect compromise. It’s small and we have a small household so we feel we can grow a manageable amount of food for us in one. Here is our pallet garden tutorial so that you can decide if this might be a good option for you and your family.

First you will need a pallet and some landscaping paper. We stapled the landscaping paper along the bottom of the pallet and up the sides, to keep the dirt from spilling out. You could also nail wood to the sides if you want, to create a box if you don’t have landscaping paper.

Next, dig up some dirt. We covered the bottom of the pallet garden with dirt {on top of the landscaping paper} and then added 2 really big bags of potting soil. The amount of potting soil that you need really depends on the size of the pallet that you use. We used a really long pallet, so I think one big bag {the ones that cost $2-$3 will be sufficient for most pallets}.

Finally, plant your seeds per instructions on the packages. We decided to try a different type seed {watermelon, tomatoes, jalapenos, carrots, you name it, we planted it} in each hole just to see what might actually grow in a pallet. After a few weeks, we will do a follow up post to let you guys know if we were able to get anything to grow. Either way, it will be fun for my daughter and I to work on this garden together this spring and summer.
