Decorating a home in modern rustic style

Rustic style is not all about roughly hewn timber fashioned into slabs of furniture - although this furniture can look stunning! Today's take on rustic style is more on looking at ways to incorporate reclaimed or rustic pieces into a modern or contemporary home; furniture that is comfortable and casual - or rustic - without looking like you dragged it in from the trash heap.

While modern rustic style is not to everyone's taste, perhaps more of us should be looking at ways to incorporate more reclaimed or restored elements into our home decor, rather than buying new or mass-produced and manufactured furniture.

An old barn door - fitted with an industrial-style sliding track system - takes on new purpose as an interior door. Decorating a home in rustic style allows you to discover old finds that make interesting and surprising accessories for a home. Even old timbers - like these shown below - can be used to frame doorways.

Reclaimed timber reaches to new heights as vaulted ceilings and beams and work beautifully with stone tiles, raw concrete or plastered walls and organic materials such as stainless steel, concrete, stone and leather.

Love this platform bed raised on reclaimed scaffolding beams. Even the chaise lounge sits on raw timber beams, while a wallpaper with forest motif and faux fur add a rustic finishing touch to this master bedroom.

Hewn from massive timbers of oak, every piece celebrates nature in its rustic simplicity. Rough-hewn beams are carefully hand-selected, planed and sanded. Wood features distinctive nicks, exposed knots and imperfections that speak to the wood's provenance.

Rustic doesn't have to be woodsy. There are many ways to incorporate rustic elements into modern and contemporary decor. Think natural and organic touchy-feely with stone-clad walls and wooden beams.

Of course, there are those who prefer to go the true rustic route with reclaimed timber panelled walls, raw wood ceiling beams as an alternative to manufactured options.

While raw concrete or plaster walls is a finish that many eco-conscious homeowners are looking at these days, this option add something new. The technique shown here is achieved by casting concrete into timber frames, which are removed once the concrete has cured.

If you love the look and feel of timber but can't quite see yourself building an entire home, there's still plenty of options for using reclaimed timber. Oregon pine flooring and floors removed from older homes are the perfect materials for framing a patio, porch or verandah.

Crafted using kiln-dried sustainable timber, this platform-style bottom bunk features stout corner posts and combines functionality with modern design. While not all timber can be reclaimed and there is a limited supply of reclaimed timber in the marketplace, here in South Africa our supply of SA Pine is managed as sustainably as possible and kiln-dried for use. Whitewash or liming can be used to add various finishing methods other than varnish and paint.
