Hey Y’all – Custom Text Door Mat Tutorial

I love IKEA. It’s just about my happiest place on the entire dang planet. I don’t know why I love all of the super cheap stuff but I do. Plainly put, IKEA is a crafter’s paradise my friends.

And when I saw this rug for around ten bucks or so I snapped one up. Did I have anything in mind for it? Not really but I knew I could do something awesome with it.

Around that time I was in Houston with my parents and nephews. And kids being kids they were teasing me about totally random things. They’d flamboyantly enter the room and say “hey, y’all – I’m Auntie A!” Because, yes, I say hey y’all all of the time. It’s in my videos, it’s what I say when I meet up with people, it’s what I say when I walk into the doctor’s office. It’s just my greeting and it has been for years. It’s a matter of habit at this point!

So I thought it would be kind of tongue in cheek to make a mat with my catch phrase for my pad. It turned out pretty cute and though you may not want yours to say the same, I’ll show you how to make your own pretty darn easily.

For this project you will need:

• Plain doormat
• Spray paint in a light color would be best but bright might work out okay
• Small pieces of poster board (mine came 8 sheets to a bag at Walmart)
• Silhouette cameo and 12×24 inch cutting mat OR x-acto knife and printer

First if you’re using a Silhouette Cameo, you’ll need to trim your paper to fit. Your posterboard will only be 22 inches long, so keep that in mind when setting your file to print in the Silhouette Studio.

The word you want in the size you want may not fit straight across on your poster board. Make it the size you want it and rotate it until it will fit onto the board. Make sure you leave the last 2 inches of the mat unused since your poster board isn’t that long.

Cut it and weed it.

Flip the whole thing over and peel THE MAT away from the poster board. If you go the other way you’ll have a big curled up mess on your hands for your stencil.

Now my Y’all wouldn’t fit on one piece of poster board so I cut into two with the y on one board and the ‘all on the next. You might need to do the same and it’s no big deal, for real.

Trim around your words so that you can see your mat through all of the cut out letters.

Use spray adhesive to stick the stencils to the mat (it won’t be perfect but it will help it not fly off).

Use tape to secure the edges. Now I didn’t think of this, but it’s a good idea to cover up all of the areas you don’t want to paint. Like the edges. Der!

Finish by putting the inside of the letters down by spraying a lot of adhesive and putting something with some weight on it (like a shoe or the can) to help them sit tight.

My initial plan was to go hot pink! but the paint I had was more maroon when it dried. Fail. And so I found a can of bright purple. Not what I was going for. So I went digging in my stash and found orange. With fall upon us it seemed the perfect solution. A bright, fun color!

So I sprayed the crap out of it. Including my uncovered edges. But you’re going to be smarter than that!

Allow to fully dry and then remove the poster board away. Now here it looks decent enough but in not so bright light the words were really hard to read. Ugh.

So I grabbed a 2 ounce bottle of acrylic craft paint in a brighter orange and a stiff bristled brush (Tulip brushes are fab for this sort of stuff) and went over the spray with acrylic. It wasn’t a huge deal but I would have preferred to skip this step as it is completely unnecessary! But live and learn, right?

Hey Y’all – dig my new rug? It’s all fall-like and all Allison-fied in its statement!
